vs2008 replied: "Glucophage or metmorfin is used to regulate insulin resistance associated with PCOS. This will help you ovulate so you can get pregnant. If this does not work, he may prescribe a combination of glucophage and clomid to help you ovulate. Do remember to ask your doctor all these question (it is your right) than relying on members here. Good luck!"

Glucophage tablet issues? Basically, my husband was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes 8 years ago and following a continual struggle with stabilizing his blood sugar we've finally found a method that works so well for him. Basically, it's all to do with carb counting and exercise (and he's losing weight!). He is currently on 4x500mg metformin a day and as an experiment the last few days he's taken just 2 in the morning. It hasn't changed his sugar levels and they're still as good as ever, we really can't believe it to be honest! I'm a little concerned though as he's talking about coming off of the tablets completely and I don't want him to without speaking to a doctor first. Because of his hours at work (and not very understanding employers!) it's impossible for him to get an appointment atm. What should we do? Would you carry on taking 2 or 4 tablets or give them up completely? What is the worst that would happen? Thanks so much for any help you can offer.

dr replied: "well its better if u consult an experienced doctor....from my study metformin doesnt cause hypoglycemia and is therefore good for those daibetic who r also over weight as it is also used for decreasing weight of over weight non diabetic patients....it is given as a first line treatment for newly diagnosed cases along with excersice and if it works its actually good coz it doesnt produce hypoglycemia.....as per my knowledge if he has good sugar levels by only excersing and ofcourse the altering the type of food he takes then he probably shudnt be gettin the medication....but it all depends on wat happens when he doesnt take them....will still his sugars levels remain controlled with it....talking about worst that can happen...his sugars level may rise again..."

crazyowl replied: "Well done to him for the control he has got. Personally I would ask him to continue on the 2 tablets for a while and see if his levels stay the same and then after a month or so cut it down again and see monitoring his levels as he goes. If you live in the uk then try ringing NHS direct on 0845 4647 and get advise from them. The worst thing that would happen is his blood sugars would go out of control and he may have to struggle to get them back under control. It may be because he is losing weight, exercising AND counting his carbs that diet and exercise alone may be enough to control his levels for now."

Can anyone give me a diagnosis? How long does it take for a tablet to get digested? I take glucophage, ramipril, atoravastatin and coapprovel. I usually take the tabs in the morning. Recently I vomited at night and the tablets came out. they were soft and swollen. Also sometimes after I excrete faeces, the faeces are normal colour but the toilet water goes black. What could be wrong with me?

old lady replied: "You aren't taking that combination of drugs all by yourself, because they aren't over-the-counter drugs. So your best bet at this point would be to go back to the doctor who prescribed them and find out exactly what is going on. It's unusual for a tablet to still be in your esophagus 12 hours after ingesting it. This suggests that you may have a problem with the esophagus - a pouch that could collect not only pills, but other detritus as well and that could be a source of infection. If the toilet water is going black, you truly need to see a doctor pronto."

aWellWisher replied: "The medicines suggest you have Hypertension, Diabetes & Hypercholesterolaemia. Toilet water getting black may be due to some food articles, rather than medicines or disease. Still best will be to get a check up in this regard. Enteric coated pills go undigested to the intestine, others dissolve and get absorbed in stomach in 1/2 to 2 hours. Good luck!"

schumigirl1956 replied: "its the tablets some tablets make your water change colour has i know i am on certain tablets and my water is blue , i know for panadol it takes about 1-1/2 hours see your doctor and see what he/she says before taking any more tablets"

Llani replied: "You can also call your pharmacist, the number is on the pre ion bottles, who can answer your questions immediately and correctly."

Ollie replied: "Hi,I hope you have been to see your doctor."

boobiebear replied: "I really think you need to talk to your doctor on this one"

Has anyone reduced your dosage of Glucophage because it makes you sick? I have been diagnosed with PCOS and my doctor has prescribed 1500mg a day of Glucophage but taking the tablet thrice a day made me sick to the point that I just could not function. I have reduced the dosage myself to 1000mg a day and have very little side effects. Do you think it will still be effective? We have been ttc for the last 6 months and the doc now says that i have endometriosis in my other ovary. What do you think my odds are of conceiving? I know these are too many questions but appreciate all the serious advice. Hi JillDaniel, I have regular cycles and have been tracking them for the last 6 months. Another thing that confuses me is that each time I went to the doctor, I was ovulating properly and at my last visit I was also told that my egg had ruptured well, but I was not successful in conceiving. I am beginning to wonder what the problem can be, if inspite of pcos and endometriosis, I am ovulating regularly. Appreciate the help!

jennanderton2006 replied: "never change your dosage. the doctor perscribed it in that amount for a reason call your doctor and ask them first they may change it. you could make it very hard to concieve now. see your doctor about it"

jilldaniel_wv replied: "Drs. usually prescribe glucophage to be started at 500mg a day for 1 week then 1000mg a day for 1 week then up the dose to 1500mg a day. Did you just start taking 1500mg a day without working your way up to it? If so, that's your problem. Stay at 1000mg for a week and then try 1500 again. Do you have regular cycles?"

tnladi2000 replied: "My mother took Glucophage for her diabetes. She took it for several years before experiencing any problems, but eventually it made her deathly ill. She was so sick that they started to take out her gallbladder when it was really just the medicine that made her sick. So, having said that, if I were you, I'd speak to my doctor about trying another medicine. I can't answer any of your other questions, but since i did have knowledge about the effects of Glucophage, I thought I'd put in my thoughts."

im_shady77 replied: "1500mg is considered the dosage needed to treat PCOS... Everyone with PCOS is different, but I don't have endometriosis which is another fertility issue in itself and I still had to end up giving myself injections before getting pregnant. I started with just Metformin (Glucophage) and it did nothing for me. Then I took Clomid and it also didn't do anything. I got pregnant my first month on injections. I don't want to bring you down, but chances are you'll have to get much more treatment before you ttc, especially with PCOS and endometriosis..."

Conviction replied: "I have PCOS and type 2 Diabetes. I had a bad reaction to Glucophage as well... rather than change dosages my Dr. recommended changing pre ions. I now take Avandia with great results. It's never wise to mess with your dosages.. talk to your Dr. about Glucophage alternatives... but don't try to just do it on your own."

cherrydr.pepper replied: "I also have PCOS and am on Metformin(Glucophage) and on 1500 mg. My dr. said that sometimes it causes very upset stomach so it would be best to start out taking 500 for a week, then a 1000 then finally the 1500mg. I am having surgery in Oct called laparoscopy to remove a polyp they found in my uterus by an HSG scan. If your going thru a fertility specialist be prepared for the HSG. I am also on Clomid with the Metformin have been on it for 2 cycles. I will also be having ovarian drilling when the polyp is removed and they are also going to make sure I don't have endometrosis with the PCOS. Good Luck!"

Why am I supposed to take Metformin [glucophage] with food? My doctor prescribed 1000MG of Metformin a day, in 500MG tablets. She wants me to take them all at supper time with food. I always forget, so I usually take them right before I go to bed. Is there a better benefit if I do take them with food? Let me know! I am taking it for PCOS, and have been on it for about 2 weeks.

Angel G replied: "There are 2 reasons why you should be taking Metformin with food. 1. Food softens the blow of taking medication. You can imgaine, when the tablet hits your stomach it fizzles and disperses with the acid in your stomach. Without food, tablets can damage the lining of your stomach, including the acid pH etc. 2. Metformin is associated with Diabetes and its your insulin. Someone whose insulin secretion is working well would be secreting the right amounts as they eat. You are risking a hperglycaemic attack by eating first, then taking your insulin. Another good way to ensure the best outcome when taking tablets is to take them with milk. Drink some first, then the tablet, then rinse with somemore. Milk lines the oesophogus and stomach and will protect your flesh from hardcore chemicals."

Metformin/Glucophage Overdose? how much is too much? I've been taking 1500 mg of Glucophage a day and my Dr. just switched me to 2000 mg per day. He also changed by tablet size to a 1000 mg tablet. So yesterday morning I took two 1000 mg tablet & last night I took two 1000 mg tablets for a total of 4000 mg in 24 hours. I just figured out what I'd done because I went to take it again this morning and read the side of the bottle & realized it said one pill twice a day. Is this dangerous? I know there is a condition called lactic acidosis that can happen from too much metformin but would 4000 mg be considered an overdose? I am EXTREMELY nauseous and jittery feeling. I checked my blood sugar and it's 92 so that's ok. Any info would be appreciated.

tam replied: "Call your doctor or local emergency room now."

medicines during pregnancy? My doc says me to use aspimed tablet ,duphastone and glucophage tablets ,along with usual folic acid and prenatal vit. She's my gynea and i'm pregnant 4 mnths;when i tell others about these med they say they only take folic acid. my doc knows better about me but still is it ok for me n baby??????????

Steph replied: "If your doctor told you to take them then trust her. Shes not going to give you something to take when she knows yor pregnant that could hurt your baby."

wmayers99 replied: "The absolute worst thing you can do is listen to anybody other than your doctor. As you know, glucophage is meant to treat diabetes. Untreated diabetes during pregnancy is a very serious threat to your life, as well as that of your baby. Your best bet is NOT to tell others about your meds! That's personal information they have no right to and that you should not be blabbing, anyway."

Neomi Thomas replied: "i agree if your doctor has you on those medications then she thinks its best for you and baby to take them. As for glucophage, that's a sugar regulating pill it helps with diabetes, its safe for baby, I don't know what the other two meds are for. But when you talk to other pregnant mothers they may not have the same medical problems you have. Just a little insight."

Mary replied: "Your doctor usually knows best. If YOU are uncomfortable with her decision, get another doctor's opinion and go from there. Don't listen to your friends because they won't understand your medical conditions like a doctor does."

I was neglecting diabetes , One day my weight was becoming less.? and i was in serious condition. Latter i went to hospital and i was like about to die, and now slowly my HBA1C came down from 7.2 to 6.9. Is i am OK or i am in problem. I am taking 500 mg of glucophage 2 tablets and 100 mg of acarobose . before dinner only.

Hunter replied: "what is 100mg is for suger it is can be die or not?"

dingding replied: "That's a great improvement in your A1C, and you are in a good range. Most docs would prefer to see you < 6.5, so just a little further tightening should get you there. Good job!"

Jackie replied: "You obviously know very little about being a type 2 diabetic. If you were actually experiencing unexplained weight loss. It meant that your diabetes was out of control. An A1c of 7.2% going to 6.9% is an improvement but not a significant one. Unfortunately there is no cure for diabetes so your chronic condition is going to progress to the point of no medications will help nor will your diet or exercise help, I'm sorry but those are the facts."

Diabetics? blood sugar swings? I have expierenced a sudden drop in my blood sugar, has God healed me or is something else going on? I was taking 3 glucophage tablets aday and eating what I wanted to eat. I started feeling weak and my blood sugar was down arourd 74. I have dropped off my medicine, actually only taking 3 tablets in 3 days, is this a normal swing or is there something else going on. I am feeling great now and my sugar is still down around a hundred.

Rammohan replied: "There should be something more. Check your doctor immediately otherwise you may faint and fall soon."

Dr. Sam replied: "If you are relatively newly diagnosed, you might be going through the "honeymoon" period. Otherwise, I can not explain this unless you lost a lot of weight or drastically altered your diet, but you'd be aware of those changes."

smilingmick replied: "Diabetes is such a serious matter. You need to see your doctor and get some blood work done. Your doc should be able to figure out why your sugars are better. I find if the weather is really warm that my sugars can go lower due to sweating out the sugars in your body. Other than that, I am not sure why else your sugars are better like that."

mopargrapeape replied: "My father is diabetic and he has had the some thing from time to time. His Doctor has cut back one of the meds he is on and it has helped. The best thing to do is talk to your Doctor about it, you may need to change or lower your meds. Please don't stop taking them or cutting back on them without the approval of your Doctor."

janice h replied: "Why are you changing the dosage on your medicine on your own. You could experience serious complications. Diabetes is nothing to fool around with. First get back with your doctor and get your blood tested, second follow your doctors advice with regard to medication, third see a dietitian and get on a good meal plan ( one you can live with not just live on) Medication will not do everything you must combine medication with diet and exercise. When you do all three you will get control and stay in control of your diabetes."

Scouser7674 replied: "Your food does not complement the medicine. Drop in sugar levels are caused by insufficient food consumption when on medication. The same goes to high sugar level."
