Is Amlodipine generic for Procardia? Amlodipine 2.5 mg has been ordered to replace Nifedical XL 30 mg. for blood pressure I am concerned about the mg. difference.

Rupert Roo replied: "The first poster is right. Amlodipine is Norvasc and Procardia is nifedipine which is also a Ca channel blocker but works more peripherally, I believe (Dihydropyridine). Edit:Just so you know, 2.5mg qday of Amlodipine is a wimpy dose, most people I see on it are taking at least 5mg qd."

Jim H replied: "you cannot compare different drugs by the strengths.each drug has it's own pharmacologic profile. you can only compare apples with apples not apples and oranges the nifedipine xl is an extended release product so more mg are needed. you are most likely takeing the amlodipine more often than the nifedipine..the result will be seen when the blood pressure is controlled."

Apparently, if your doctor thinks you should be on any of the medications you mentioned then you have a heart problem/high blood pressure problem and overdosing on this can kill your heart, or not taking the right mg dose would not treat the diagnosis which was given to you by your Cardiologist/GP. You need your heart to live, call your doctor!"

Yaybob replied: "Yes, amlodipine is the same thing as Norvasc. It is a highly regarded medication that has been in use almost two decades. It is considered very safe at any age. I am a physician, but I also take it for my blood pressure, too. Mine doesn't look like yours. If you are asking whether weight loss will make it possible to discontinue one of your medicines and still have good blood pressure, the answer is that it very well might, although not necessaritly. It will be good for you either way."

Amlodipine for My Cat's High Blood Pressure? Hi My cat is on Amlodipine for his high blood pressure. He must take a quarter of a tablet a day. The tablets from the Vets are quite costly. Esmerelda replied: "Cats are really sensitive to meds. They cannot tolerate all the same meds people can. Ask your vet if there is a less expensive alternative. High blood pressure in a cat is serious. It can cause heart disease and kidney and liver problems. The only way we knew one of our cats had it was that she went suddenly blind. She took a drug called Atenlolol that was not very expensive at all. You might ask about that."

Patty O replied: "You will probably need a pre ion for the medication you've found on the Internet, which will need to be approved by the vet. When I was treating my kitty for CRF and giving fluids, I found them considerably less expensive on-line, but needed a pre ion. So I printed the info so I would have a record and took it to the vet for the pre ion. Instead, they matched the Internet price..said as long as it was above their cost they could. So the bags of fluids that they had been charging me $16.50 per bag, they sold to me for $2.95 a bag! I bought a case. Sadly, Maybelle crossed the rainbow bridge before we used all the fluids. I donated all the supplies and food I had for her to the vet treating her for another client that was treating a CRF kitty. So, print the information you have found and when it is time to refill his pre ion, take the information with you and see if they will at least give you a discount. If they cannot, maybe they will approve the generic and provide documentation so you can obtain it on-line. Purrs and prayers for you and kitty."

Norvasc Alternative for my Dog? Amlopres? My Shar Pei is in Renal Failure. It also turns out that his blood pressure is really high. After determining that some other hypertension drug was not doing the trick, my Vet prescribed Amlodipine -she said to get the generic if its available yet- its not, its only sold as Norvasc here in the US. The cost of the Norvasc is really high- expecially considering all of the other special things Im having to buy (such as IV fluids). So, I ordered generic Amlodipine from a Canadian Pharmacy. So I was rather surprised when the envelope showed up from India containing a drug called Amlopres, made by a company called Cipla. My question is- is this a safe alternative to give to my dog? Do I have anything else to be concerned about? Its certainly much more affordable, but Im rather concerned about it at this point in time.

DP replied: "I would be suspicious and wouldn't give it to my dog. There are warnings all the time online about ordering pre ion drugs from companies, doesn't matter if it's from Canada or within the US or Mexico... You should always be very wary. Especially India, I have seen reports of them having all sorts of drugs in their drugstores in their country that are counterfeit drugs. You might be doing more harm than good."

dragonsz7 replied: "they are both good medicines. your doctor feels you need them for you high blood pressure so yes they are OK for 26 y/o. you sound like you do not fully understand why your on the meds, go back and talk to your doctor and do not leave till you fully understand everything."

All that will show up are the ones they will test for, but you have a prescreen questionare to fill out and have to tell them what you are taking and why. If you don't tell them before the test, you have no chance at the job because nobody likes liars or people who conceal the truth on the job."

If you really want the job, get a clearance or note from your prescribing MD to explain your possible positive results BEFORE the employer gets the results. You will probably have to retake the test. Some meds are detectable for a very long time."

I was wondering if taking a combine medicine more better than taking it separately? I have high blood pressure that I need to take medication to control, My problem is the one pre ion that was given to me and it is called amlodipine besy- benazepril. is kinda expensive and my insurance does not cover it but when I asked the pharmacist about it he told me to have the Doctor separate the pre ion and give me a pre ion for each and it would be cheaper. If I brought it combine it would run $170 for 3 months and if I took it separately then it would cost me $40 for 3 months. My question would I be getting the same benefit if I took the medication separately or what draw back if any from them giving me two separate medication. Unfortunately the list of medication for high blood pressure on most of these generic discount are not Program like Walmart of Walgreen etc do not include the one that are usually prescribe by my doctor or the list from my insurance does not have any common high blood pressure medicine either.

shine replied: "I tell you by experience that if it works do not change one thing. It is hard to get the proper combination of meds to control BP. Most pharm companies have programs to help you get the meds prescribed. Start looking at them for help."

Rocketman on vacation replied: "Yes, they are the same. Blood pressure (BP) that is too high can cause lots of serious problems. Do not change any dosage without talking to your doctor. This medication is widely prescribed and quite safe if you need it and have no contraindications. You can ask the pharmacy for full information about your drugs and if you still have questions, or if the information is hard to understand (which it could be), the pharmacist will answer questions and explain the medications and how they work. You should also have a blood pressure measuring device (sphygmomonometer) and take your blood pressure regularly. Record the results in a daily journal. Then you will have solid evidence to present to your doctor to show what your BP is doing. Lisinopril is also a BP medication. These two BP medications are often prescribed together to reduce side that a larger dose of one medication might cause. Together, two medications given at lower dosages can lower BP effectively. Losing weight will help reduce your BP, as will exercise. As always, if you have questions, call your doctor, part of the fee doctors charge includes explaining things to patients.
